Indie Ogden Spotlight: DJ Linus Stubbs

Linus Stubbs was raised here in Ogden, Utah collecting records, skateboarding, snowboarding and mixing beats together in remarkable ways. In his early teens Linus was inspired to start mixing beats from going to desert raves, local hip hop shows, and house parties and his determination helped him continue to create and prosper. Now Linus Stubbs’ beats are sought after by some of hip hop’s best up-and-coming emcees. Check out my interview with the artist himself and learn a bit more about this local talent!
When did you start making music?

June 2001.

How did you come up with your name?

Coming home intoxicated from a club night with my friend DJ Stefan, I was thinking of names. I asked him “what’s the characters name in the Peanuts cartoons that plays the piano? Not really knowing the correct answer, he tells me “Linus,” so I chose it. Few years later I find out the correct answer was Schroeder… I disliked that name and it was too late to change my name at that point anyway.

What would you say your musical style is?

Hip Hop (not the kind that’s claimed to be on the radio, because there’s a big difference!) Boom Bap, or also considered “90′s” style Hip Hop. Radio rap gives people a bad misconception of what Hip Hop music is really about.

DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Madlib, J Dilla (RIP), Rza, DJ Stefan, Andy MacFarland aka Macapella, Khrysis, many others…

Favorite show you’ve played?

Opening for Action Bronson at Club Hotel in Salt Lake City with my great friend Task Rok, where we played nothing but songs from our latest album “The Movement.” What made it truly special for me was having everyone there that was included on the album. DJ Juggy, DJ Erockalypze & Phil Maggio. Also, the crowd knew most of the words to all the songs despite how newly released the album was at the time. The time of this show was about a month after our album had been released. A truly special night for me.

What are you working on?

Soon I will be dropping an EP with Wildelux. Current projects in the works are:  A co-produced album with Scotland beatmaker Andy Mac including emcees from across the globe. Album with Dumb Luck. Also working on a project with Salt Lake- based emcee Umang Khosla

Plans for the future?

Continue to grow my brand by networking with talented artists and to never forget what making music is all about. FUN! Because when it no longer becomes fun to create then the love for the art is lost.

What are some local Ogden bands/musicians you love?

Shaky Trade and Spell Talk.

favorite local place to play a show?

Club Hotel/Elevate in Salt Lake City

What are your favorite things to do in Ogden?

Snowboarding, hanging out with my crazy friends at Brewskies and drinking an occasional Moskow Mule at The City Club.

What is your favorite business in Ogden?

Grounds for Coffee on 25th St. in the mornings. The Music Shop. Tona for sushi. And Brewskies for all the wonderful bartenders and waitresses that allow us to have a great time.

Do read Indie ogden?

I used to read it regularly, however lately my limited access to internet and busy schedule don’t allow me to have a lot of time to sit down and enjoy it like I used to. But you can definitely count me as being a supporter. You have shown me a lot of support so its only fair that I do the same. So, a huge thanks goes out to Indie Ogden!

Any upcoming shows?

I will be DJing for the Indie Ogden 1 year anniversary bash. So everyone that supports Indie Ogden should come out and have a great time.
