Indie Ogden’s Guide to Northern Utah Getaways

Ogden is home to some fantastic chain hotels, and don’t get me wrong, I love a good deal; and some of those hotels have waffle makers in the continental breakfast room. I mean, come on… waffle makers! But there is just something special about a hotel with a little bit of local charm, history, and style. In Ogden city the only historical or non-chain hotel you will find is the Ben Lomond, but just through the Ogden canyon is a handful of spectacular lodging options.

Maybe you just want a weekend away without the kids? How about hitting up the slopes WITHOUT a drive home? There are even spa options available for those sore muscles after hitting the slopes. Here are some local faves for you out-of-towners or locals looking for a stay-cation or vacation here in the O-town area!

The Historic Ben Lomond
2510 Washington Blvd
Ogden, UT 84401
(801) 627-1900
www.benlomondsuites.com

Built in 1927, the Ben Lomond is actually an addition to the original 5 story Reed Hotel. 11 stories were added and “The Bigelow Hotel” was born. Marriner S. Eccles acquired the hotel and renamed it the Ben Lomond Hotel in 1933. In the 1980s the 350 room hotel was completely renovated and converted to a 120 suite condo-hotel.
The Ben Lomond is the last of the three “grand hotels” in Utah that is still being operated as a hotel. Evidence of this legacy can be seen in the crystal chandeliers, marble floors and decorative ceilings as you enter the lobby of this historic hotel, which is listed on both the Utah & National Historic Registers. Located in the lobby, visit MacCools Irish pub for a great meal. Stay for the Local Charm, History, Supposed Hauntings, and Afternoon Tea. You can walk to anything you could need from The Ben Lomond, dining, shopping, entertainment, nightlife, concerts, and more! If its important to you- ask for an upgraded room with a flat screen TV, they are in the process of updating the whole Hotel. Remember this hotel was built in 1927 and has its quirks- that’s part of the charm!

The Ogden River Inn
http://www.ogdenriverinn.com/

Located just steps from the Ogden river, The Ogden River Inn makes a great stop if you are looking to experience Ogden, Utah. The bike path, and of course just right over the river from Slackwater pizza- the Ogden River Inn is a local hotel worth checking out!

The Alaska Inn
435 Ogden Canyon
Ogden, UT 84401
(801) 621-8600

Nestled in the idyllic Ogden Canyon sits the Alaska Inn, a cozy B&B with 11 Alaskan themed cabins and 12 suites. What I find so special about the Alaskan is that it fits for both couples who are looking for a quiet, romantic getaway; and the couple looking for an adventurous exciting weekend. Located just minutes from downtown Ogden one way, you have great access to shopping entertainment and dining. Just minutes in the other direction is Pineview reservoir, ski resorts, hiking and mountain biking trails, scenic drives, and some of the best fishing in Utah. There are simply TONS of activities just steps from your room. The river keeps the canyon a few degrees cooler in the summer, and I can’t imagine a nicer more lovely place to lounge on a hot mid summer day. Stay for the amazing scenery, private cabins and suites, awesome amenities (Sparking Cider? Fresh baked cookies? Whirlpool tubs? Full breakfast, for FREE, brought right to your room? Sign me up!) and fantastic activities close by. Located on the same property is the Gray Cliff Lodge Restaurant, featuring a wonderful Sunday brunch and dining with some of the best views in Utah. View the rooms ahead of time to choose your absolute dream weekend escape, and be sure to check out our Ogden Outdoor Guide before hand to get some ideas for fun adventures to do while you are in the Ogden Canyon area.

The Snowberry Inn B&B
1315 North Highway 158
Eden, UT 84310
t: (801) 745-2634

A true B&B, the Snowberry Inn is is owned by Pat and Sherrie Dohrer. It is a large cabin located in the beautiful Ogden Valley on the east side of the Wasatch Mountain Range; through Ogden Canyon – home to Powder Mountain, Wolf Mountain and Snowbasin, and proud host of the 2002 Winter Olympic Downhill Competitive Events and the Annual Ogden Valley Balloon Festival in Eden. The Snowberry Inn looks ideal for a group event, family reunion, or wedding. The rates are affordable for the area, and includes a gourmet breakfast as well as snacks and beverages all day.

The Red Moose Lodge and Spa
2547 N Valley Junction Dr.
Eden, UT 84310
t: 801-745-MOOSE (6667)

The Red Moose Lodge and Spa is conveniently located only one mile from Wolf Mountain, the smaller and more affordable ski resort in the Ogden Valley; however its also just a short hop from Powder Mountain and Snowbasin resorts. With just 29 rooms it is a cozy yet luxurious option if you are looking for a valley getaway. It is one of the only lodges in the area I could find that allows pets (A must, for some of us!) and the Lodge also features a Spa- who wouldnt like a nice relaxing massage after a day of hiking or skiing? View their specials for a great deal (including last minute reservations now wouldnt that be a fun surprise for your significant other?) and remember that winter and summer arent the only times to play in Ogden Valley. With endless options for mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, watersports, scenic drives, a Saturday farmers market in Eden, the balloon festival in the Spring, and so much more… you might find a Spring or Fall getaway to not only be enjoyable but very affordable.

The Historic Valley House Inn
7318 East 200 South
Huntsville, UT 84317
t: 801-745-8259

Valley House Inn was built in 1872, hows that for some local history? It was home to Huntsvilles first Mayor, and has been home to several B&B’s over the years. Online reviews are mixed, but its location just down the block from Huntsville Square is wonderful if a day of boating or swimming is what you are looking for, and if the homes exterior is any indication, I would expect plenty of historic charm. Fair warning that this B&B specifies guests are not allowed on the first floor of the residence, meaning you have no access to the kitchen – and breakfast is the only meal served. Reviews are mixed on this, as well. The rooms all feature fireplaces, large tubs, and two have breakfast balconies. Prices are higher than some in the area, but the owner runs specials so be sure to check those out!
