Copper Enameling at Artisan Collective

If you haven’t heard of The Artisan Collective, listen up!   Nestled in the junction next to Megaplex theater, this artist space houses local wares from dozens of local crafters and artisans and to top it off, they have super cheap classes where you can learn everything from sewing to glass blowing!

This past week The Ogden Rad Ladies took a copper enameling class (ya, we didn’t know what that was either) and we are all hooked now.  I think we all made three pieces of jewelry each and would have made more had it not started to get late.

So, what the heck is copper enameling? Let me break it down for ya.

Copper enameling is when you buff a piece of copper and use a torch to melt different types of glass onto copper to create designs and unique colors.  It sounds complicated, but it’s a pretty easy and fun craft that even older kiddos can do.

I would go into every detail of the crafting process, but I don’t want to ruin it for you because it’s pretty amazing to see the transformation and to learn this cool craft on your own. What I will do, though, is tell you that this class did way more than just teach us a skill. At the end of the two hours, we had laughed, learned and bonded. We felt empower from lighting a blow torch and using cool tools, something many of us were afraid to do. We felt stronger and braver and just a smidgen cooler.

Using your hands in a class with other cool women is like experiencing a compressed version of summer camp. When it was over, we were hugging each other goodbye, cherishing our dirty hands and the souvenirs of our time together.

If you want to learn a new skill, feel empowered and hand out with amazing local artisans and crafters, sign up for a class!
