If you know me personally, you know that I have a bee obsession. I love everything about these little pollinators from the good they do for our world to their amazingly delicious honey. I took a couple of beekeeping classes as a teenager and wanted to grow up to become a bee lady but alas, it never happened.  I was recently discussing  getting my own hive for my backyard when my husband and I drove past this little shop, it was fate!  I am so glad that I was able to do this spotlight and I hope it inspires some of you to welcome these creatures into your yard.

What is Deseret Hive?
Deseret Hive Supply is a hobbiest beekeeping store. We opened in 2012 and supply quality beekeeping supplies and classes to everyone. If you are interested in the aspects of beekeeping from simply honey to pollination we are here to help.

Can anyone get a bee box?
We have Beekeepers of all ages. Beekeeping is a fun and fascinating hobby that anyone can enjoy. Beehives can be placed almost anywhere. From rooftops, balconies, small yards to large open fields. Your honey bees will find the flowers they need.

How can someone learn more about bees and bee keeping?
The honeybee is a gentle creature who is often blamed for stings it had nothing to do with. We hear the words “OUCH I was stung by a bee!” Yet the creature to blame was not in fact a bee but a wasp or yellow jacket. But the bee takes the blame and goes about its life as if nothing happened. Don’t get me wrong, bee’s can and do sting but not as often as people would have you think. The honey bee does not go out looking for something to sting. It’s life is much more complex. From the minute it hatches in the hive it has a job to do. From being a nurse bee, making comb to bring in nectar. Every minute of every day of its short life ( 28 days to 4 months) the honey bee is working. Producing a mere 12th of a teaspoon of honey. Yet that small amount adds up to add to a wonderful product that man can not duplicate. If you would like to learn more about honey bees you can come down to Deseret Hive Supply 1516 Washington blvd in Ogden and have a look at our observation hive and our friendly staff would be happy to answer any questions you have.

What kinds of hives do you sell?
DHS carries everything you will need to start a hobby in beekeeping. We carry Langstroth hives along with Top Bar hives. We have classes for the beginner to live workshops and classes just about honey. So don’t be afraid if you have any interest in bees now is the time to come in and see if it’s for you.

What are the benefits to urban beehives?
We have all heard about the disappearing honeybee. You can play a part in helping save them. Urban bee hives have a significant benefit for not only you and our society but for the bees themselves. Every new hive out there helps establish a network of pollinators that will help your gardens and flowers grow and produce more. The bees also pollinate your neighborhood and the farms and orchards around their hive. Upwards of 5 or more miles from the hive, helping produce the food we all need to survive. They say 3 out of every 4 bites we eat can be contributed to the work of the honeybee.
