There’s a surprising number of places that offer yoga in Ogden, but my favorite is by far Bikram Yoga Ogden, upstairs from Grounds for Coffee on 25th.
For those of you that may not know about Bikram yoga, here’s some background. Started by Bikram Choudhury, it’s a series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises that lasts for 90 minutes. Also, and probably most importantly, it’s done in a room that is 105°F. So yes, it’s hot yoga. Instructors are required to be certified through a nine week program taught by Bikram that includes two sessions a day and classes on anatomy, nutrition, the benefits of yoga, and more. Because of the strict training, one benefit is that there is pretty much a Bikram studio close by, no matter where you are, that offers the same program.
The local studio in Ogden is run by Michael Larson, and offers a great Bikram experience. The first time I went, I hadn’t really done any yoga before, and it was quite the push to get through the 90 minutes. There were a number of times sitting in the middle of a pose and wondering what in the world I had gotten myself into. However, after class was over, I felt exhausted and sore to a degree I wasn’t sure was possibly, and it was definitely in the good way. It was tiring and energizing all at the same time, and I’m sure I sweat out over a gallon.
Bikram Yoga Ogden offers classes at least twice daily (morning and afternoon), and three times Monday through Thursday (one more in the evening). The instructors are all incredibly pleasant and do a great job working with you to make sure you get the most out of class. While the pricing is a little steep, Bikram Yoga Ogden has student/senior/military discounts and there are a number of packages that make it a little more affordable. If it’s your first time, I would highly recommend going for the $39 introductory package, which gives you unlimited visits for 30 days. The first one will be rough, but you do get used to it and the benefits only increase the more you go. Make sure you hydrate plenty beforehand, and bring your own yoga mat, towel, and water bottle (you can also rent if you don’t have your own).
