Ogden Pub Runners makes exercise a party!

CR5A0562Have you ever wanted to get into running but didn’t know where to start or didn’t have anyone to run with? Ogden Pub Runners may be the group for you. This local group of runners meets weekly to get out for some exercise, stopping in a local shop for a beer and some food afterwards. I sent the pub runners a few questions about their meetups and how you can get involved. Check it out!

What are pub runners?
Ogden Pub Runners or OPR are a group of people who enjoy running, eating and drinking with friends. Each week a different runner is made responsible for picking the next location. This is known as the passing of the cape. We’ve gone as far south as The Garage on Beck, as far north as Andy’s Lounge, as far east as the Shooting Star, but our home base is Ogden.
Our basic criteria includes
1) The location must serve food (we’ve been to places that barely passed this test)
2) The location must serve adult beverages (well…after all we aren’t called the Ogden Soda Runners)
3) There must be a reasonably obvious route for our folks to be able to run, jog or walk up to 5 miles prior to dinner.

How did the group get started?
The first OPR meeting was on August 1, 2013 at the center of the group are brothers Jake and Kase Johnstun. Based on their experiences in the north-west with similar groups, and upon Kase’s return to Ogden the two brothers set off to start a group here in Ogden. The group has grown from a small seasonal group to a consistent weekly event with nearly a dozen attendees each week.

Who can join?
We have a vast social media presence with a Facebook, Twitter Feed, and Instagram. Membership only requires that you enjoy our company. No membership dues, no inside connection, no required attendances. Ideally we’d add a new member to our ranks every week.

What athletic abilities do you need?
Athletic abilities are unnecessary. We have folks rehabbing injuries, folks who simply enjoy walking as well as competitive marathoners. Many of our members simply come for the food and the folks. We lovingly call these folks ‘stool warmers’.

Where do you meet?
We have no clubhouse, no base of operations. In fact it is this nomadic trait that has us looking for a new spot each week.

What are some upcoming events you have?
We meet each week. Some weeks it’s on Wednesday some weeks on Thursday based purely on the folks that attended the previous week. This week we cancelled our regular run to go to an event where Kase Johnstun will read from his book Beyond the Grip of Craniosynostosis. Saturday Feb. 21st a hand full of the OPR’ers will participate in the Striders Winter circuit 10K race in preparation for the Ogden Marathon. On Feb. 25th join us at Slackwater pizza at 6:30pm for our weekly run/walk.

Where can locals find you?
We are a social group find us on all the major social media locations. Facebook as Ogden Pub Runners, Instagram as Ogden_pub_runners and on Twitter as @ogdenpubrunner. Of course find us on the trails at the races or at a minimum on the stools. Reach out and let us know where you are we’d love to see if we can bring the party near your part of town.
